National Championships
Over the past weekend Cornwall were well represented at the English Short Mat Bowling Association National Championships in Melton Mowbray.
On Thursday four bowlers took part in the Singles.
Chris Page (Duloe) was drawn in Group Three where he lost 7-11 to Bob Naylor (Wiltshire), won 11-6 against Neil Pratley (Oxfordshire) and lost 3-10 to Jack Pye (Norfolk) to finish third in the group and miss out on qualification for the knockout stages. Elise Daniell (Holmans), was drawn in Group Sixteen where she won 12-8 against Neil Rixon (Hertfordshire) and lost 4-15 to David Newsome (North Yorkshire) and 8-12 to Ryan Knight (Hampshire) to finish fourth in the Group.
Luke Jolly (Holmans) was drawn in Group Fifteen and was unbeaten in the group with wins against Ryan Fox (Norfolk) 8-5, Scott Wallis (West Midlands) 10-9 and Josh Burrow (Humberside) 10-8. Mark Williams (Camelford) was drawn in Group Thirteen and topped the group with two wins, 11-8 against Ian Bratton (Humberside) and 12-4 against Steve Buckett (Hampshire), losing his third group game against Andrew Smith (Northamptonshire) 9-13.
In Round Two, the first of the knockout stages Luke won 13-5 against Jack Knight (Dorset) and Mark suffered a heavy defeat to Gary Best (Kent) 2-19. In Round Thtree Luke lost 4-13 to Peter Roberts (Greater Manchester). The title was won by Matty Worden (Cheshire) who defeated Alex Kley (Dorset) 9-6 in the final.
On Friday attention turned to the Pairs with three teams from Cornwall.
Chris Page & Charlotte Rollings (Duloe) were drawn in Group Seven where they won 12-4 against George Main & Elliot James (Devon), 8-7 against Steve Maslen & So Streeter (West Sussex) and lost 8-10 to Sam Harvey & Alex Kley (Dorset) to finish second in the group and progress to the knockout stages.
Peter Hore & Steve Smith (Holmans) were drawn in Group Six where they won 9-7 against Steve Adsett & Denise Merritt (West Sussex), 12-4 against Paul Weeks & Colin Sowden (Devon) and lost 7-8 to Michael Doorey & Hogben (Kent) to finish top of the group and progress to the knockouts.
Eileen Williams & Mark Williams (Camelford) were drawn in Group Nine where they lost all three games, 8-10 to Alan Spicer & Brian McGivern (Hertfordshire), 6-15 to Bob & Carol Taylor (Essex) and 5-8 to Arthur Ritson & Shane German (Avon).
In the first round of the knockout stages Chris & Charlotte lost 3-13 to Chris Shakeshaft & Chris Williams (Shropshire) and Steve & Peter lost 5-10 to Donna Mills & Colin Sharp (Suffolk). The title was won by Ben Pay & Jason McLean (Hampshire) who defeated Craig Strong & Ross Dunkley (West Midlands) 7-6 in the final.
Saturday saw two teams from Cornwall in the Fours.
Steve Williamson, Austen Runnals, (Luxulyan) Martin Boraston (Duloe) & Luke Jolly (Holmans) were drawn in Group Two where they lost all three games, 5-9 against Sophie Heather-Warner, Brian Watkins, John Mills & Joe Loveys (Herefordshire), 5-12 against Paul Blackburn-Woods, Dave Blackburn Woods, Ste Tinsley & Sean Moon (Cheshire) and 4-14 against Ian Bratton, Jaime Smith, Ben Render & John Burrow (Humberside).
Paula D’Agostino, Mavis Jiggens, Andy Jiggens & Rob D’Agostino (Kensey Vale) were drawn in Group Fourteen where they won 11-4 against Edna Kyle-Price, Anglea Midgeley, Sarah Briscoe & John Kyle Price (Humberside), Lost 5-10 to Steve Buckett, Alistair McCrea, George Cherry & Ben Pay (Hampshire) and won 6-5 against David Watts, Roger Willcox, Howard Southwood & Santo Orlando (Oxfordshire) to finish second in the group and through to knockouts. In the first round of the knockouts they lost 4-14 to Chris Willies, Simon Willies, Keith Cooke & Jack Marshall (Norfolk).
The title was won for a second consecutive year by Steve Stanton, Jack Knight, Ben Riley & Emily Thomas (Dorset) won defeated Callum Beale, Alex Kley, Mark White & Sam Harvey (Dorset) 4-8 in the final.
The championships concluded on Sunday with the Triples with three teams representing Cornwall.
Elise Daniell (Holmans), Chris Page (Duloe) & Peter Hore (Holmans) were drawn in Group Three where they were unbeaten with wins against Joanne Millington, Jim Knowles & Dawn Cox (Herefordshire) 11-10, Les Woodward, Simon Faulkner & Gareth Davies (Oxfordshire) 12-7 and Bob Naylor, Terry Brewer & Greg Webb (Wiltshire) 9-7.
Steve Williamson, Austen Runnals (Luxulyan) & Luke Jolly (Holmans) set aside the disappointment of Saturday to top Group Fifteen with a 9-6 win against Dave Baker, Paul Taylor & Dave Andrews (Suffolk), an 8-8 draw against Steven Roberts, Mike Anderson & Charlie Cooper (Greater Manchester) and 12-6 win against Steve Morris, Martin Heath & Mike Donelly (Oxfordshire).
Craig Strippel (Penzance), Rita Hancock (Blisland) & Mark Payne (Holmans) were drawn in Group Twelve and had a difficult day losing all three games, 2-12 against Audrey Fowler, Mark Spalding & Darren Brown (Hertfordshire), 4-18 against Paul Seaman, Nigel Froud & Glenn Harvey (East Sussex) and 5-15 against Ben Riley, Jack Knight & Emily Thomas (Dorset).
In Round Two, the first round of the knockouts Elise, Chris & Peter won 12-0 against Derek Coates, Rob Wade & Chris Coates (Essex). Steve, Austen & Luke won 12-6 against Steve Puttock, Mike & Vanessa Wright (Hampshire). Round Three saw Elise, Chris & Peter lost 2-9 to Adam Smith, Jay Finney & Andy Carr (Cheshire). Steve, Austen & Luke lost 5-12 to Steve Killington, Paul Bax and Anthony Fautley (Essex). The title was won by Adam Easthope, Craig Strong & Ross Dunkley (West Midlands) who defeated Peter Roberts, Darren Lloyd & Angharad Brideaux (Greater Manchester) 7-5 in the final.

Short Mat Players Tour
After the Easter break the final events of the Short Mat Players Tour season will take place in Belfast.
On Friday 25th April the Belfast Open Pairs and Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April the World Masters will see a number of local bowlers taking part including Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Elise Daniell (Holmans), Peter Hore (Holmans), David Studden (Holmans), Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe), Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) and Mark Slack (Duloe).
Nigel Nicholls who currently holds the final qualifying spot for the England Team in August’s World Cup will be looking for a good run in the Cup knockout to secure a place
